Living to 100

Living To 100 & Beyond

There are some things you can do in your life that are simple secrets to help you live longer. If being healthy and happy into your 100s is a priority to you, then follow some lifestyle rules to help make it possible.

Peers: Who you hang around with is an important factor in determining your health. People who live longer surround themselves with people who support healthy behaviors. Health & wellness habits (good and bad) are shared and spread throughout the peer group. Try to find like-minded people who are also trying to live a healthy and active lifestyle.

Diet: People who live longer usually stay on a diet that is mostly vegetables. They eat some meat, but mostly fish. A recommended diet to follow would be the Mediterranean diet. One tip for eating less is to stop when you are 80% full, which will prevent you from overeating. Also, people who live into their hundreds have, on average, one glass of wine a day.

Passion: To live into your old age you must have a passion, something that motivates you to keep going, and gives your life meaning. One common thing that gives life purpose is volunteering. Having a sense of purpose may help you live longer by decreasing your stress hormone cortisol. If you have not yet found something that makes you want to get up in the morning it’s okay! Start trying a variety of things and see what makes you feel good.

Exercise: You don’t need to exercise, but you should live a life that encourages physical activity. Although structured exercise may extend life expectancy by 4.5 years, you can get unstructured exercise by just walking more.
