Take a Break

Balancing time with work, family, friends, and other hobbies can leave you feeling overwhelmed. You try to put in more hours, waking up early and staying awake late to catch up, but you never seem to make any headway.

Research shows us that this may not be the most productive thing to do. Pushing oneself to work harder without breaks may be less productive then taking a break.

We don’t have endless resources for energy, cognition, and attention. Even taking a 60 second break can help give you time enough to replenish your energy stores in order to be more productive. Brains need rest in order to stay creative and focused on a task. Take a break to stretch, and think about the goals at hand. When we take a respite we can reevaluate what we are trying to accomplish.

How to recharge:

  • Go for a walk
  • Take time away from technology to relax and unplug
  • Take time to hydrate
  • Eat a proper lunch, or take time for a nutritious snack
  • Take a power nap
  • Get up & stretch
  • Meditate
  • Listen to an uplifting song
  • Read a book
  • Talk to a loved one
  • Exercise
  • See your chiropractor/acupuncturist
  • Do yoga

Start by adding breaks into your daily routine. It can be a 15-20 minute break twice a day or a 10-minute break every hour. We hold a lot of stress in our shoulders & neck when we are focused on working. Take time to recharge, refocus, and renew!

Ways to Boost Your Energy

 If you are feeling slow, foggy, and sluggish then you need to kick your body into gear and give it a much needed energy boost. Approximately 20% of Americans claim they suffer from fatigue that is so severe it interferes with their daily activities. Here are some tips on how to boost your energy naturally. Don’t just get through the day-seize it!

Acupuncture & Chiropractic: These healing practices will put your body in balance so the body is able to function properly. The nervous system affects every living cell in the body, and through these professions you can be sure your system is humming along nicely. Bring balance back to your body and let the energy flow properly where it needs to go!

Stay away from the whites: Stop consuming excess sugar, salt, and white flour. It may give you a short-lived boost of energy, but will ultimately leave you feeling drained. Sugary drinks have been shown to be a major contributing factor to heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. Excess salt can leave you feeling bloated by causing you to retain water. White flour is pro-inflammatory and is void of any real nutrition. You may need to slowly get off these things to avoid putting too much shock on the body. You can use natural sweeteners like agave, honey, or stevia to help ease temptations.

Eat a rainbow: Try to eat a wide variety of colors to get all different vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients they contain. One major color often missing in most diets, according to traditional Chinese medicine, is purple/black foods (black berries, seaweed, eggplant).

Eat protein: Be sure you are getting the right amount of protein based on your body. Try to consume protein throughout the day so you can stay fuller longer, and your blood sugar levels stay more constant. This will keep your energy levels more balanced.

Drink water: Even mild dehydration can make your mind feel foggy and zap energy. Hydration will keep your digestive tract running smoothly and keep your cells properly hydrated. Try to drink half your body weight in ounces every day.

Exercise: Moving more can actually increase energy. When you exercise endorphins are released in your brain making you feel better. This can help with depression, insomnia, and fatigue. Be sure to make exercise a part of your day.

Increase fat burning: Walking intervals, doing high intensity interval training, and even weightlifting can help decrease fat stores and increase muscle mass. Fatigue is a side effect of being overweight. Loose the excess fat and start feeling more energy.

Birds of a feather: Find like-minded individuals who share your goals. Research has shown that our real, and even online, friends/family/support teams have a big impact on our health. They will be your support system during the bad times and the good!
