Why Teens Need Chiropractic & Acupuncture

Why shouldn’t all people, regardless of age, be living a healthy and happy life? Most people know how important chiropractic and acupuncture can be to help maintain a healthy body, free of interference, but some don’t realize how much these physical medicines can benefit teens and kids.

Why young people need help:

A recent study has shown that neck pain, and mid and low back pain, start early in life and that the lifetime prevalence increases rapidly during adolescence to reach adult age at 18. This makes it very important to be sure you have regular check-ups early in life to help prevent possible lifelong problems. Research found that pain would often start in one location and then move to multiple locations. By age 11, lifetime prevalence of spinal pain was approximately 86%. Over as little as a two years pain was able to move from infrequent to more frequent.

These are good reasons to see your chiropractor and acupuncturist, and a reason all in the profession should be seeing children and teens in their practice. These professions also help serve families with their wellness philosophies.

Teen Habits:

Many teens are susceptible to alcohol and drugs. Teens also need to know the importance of nutrition and healthy lifestyle habits as they are coming of age.

  • More than half of all high school students consume alcohol.
  • Approximately 4,500 underage drinkers die each year, with many thousands more visiting hospitals for illnesses and injuries related to alcohol.
  • More than 2.1 million teens abuse prescription drugs annually.
  • Research suggests that young athletes use substances more frequently than non-competitors. Some of the most commonly abused prescriptions being vicodin and oxycontin.

The Wellness Lifestyle:

As chiropractors and acupuncturists we look for ways to heal the body without the use of drugs and surgeries. When we see a case that needs further intervention we quickly get the patient the help they need. Educating young people on the dangers of abuse, and the importance of a wellness lifestyle is an important step in helping them make better choices later in life. Giving patients the facts on what the negative effects of abuse can do to their bodies and long-term health is an important message regardless of age.

Kids and Narcissism

Narcissism In Children

A new study says the trait of narcissism may be due to the way you are brought up as a child. Parents who believe their kids are better and deserve more may be passing this point of view onto their young kids.

The study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that there was a direct connection between parents who overvalue their children and children who are narcissistic.

Researchers interviewed 565 children between the ages of 7-12 and their parents every six months over an 18-month period. Age 8 is believed to be the time in a child’s life where they begin to compare themselves with their peers. The researchers took the children’s response to 10 items on the Childhood Narcissism Scale.

The researchers would also ask the children’s parents questions from the parental overvaluation scale. The researchers found that if parents overvalued their kids, the higher the kids’ narcissistic response over the period of the tests.

They also found that increased parental warmth was associated with high self-esteem in kids, but parental overvaluation was not associated with increased self-esteem.

There is also good evidence that genetics may play a role in narcissism in individuals.

Loving your child is a good thing. People can change. Just because these children are narcissistic at one time, does not mean they will be forever.

There is a distinction in overvaluing and just showing warmth to your child. Try to draw the distinction between the two when dealing with your children.
