We recently had a workshop on common food labels and their meaning. There are a lot of different words, labels, and colorful artwork that goes on the packaging of food products. Some companies make it hard to know what is really inside the food you are buying.

We made this quick guide to help you navigate some of the most common symbols.

Vegan Diet

Vegan Diet Trumps Other Diets In Weight Loss

A recent study conducted by the University of South Carolina looked at how much weight people lost on five different types of diets. The biggest weight loss was seen in those on a vegan diet (surprisingly?).

The Study: Participants were randomly assigned to one of five diets to follow over a six-month period. They also attended educational seminars about their diets and were provided healthy snacks. The diets followed were vegan, omnivore, semi-vegetarian (who ate meat periodically), pescatarian (fish and vegetables), and vegetarian (no meat, but animal products were ok). Even though the vegan diet is high in carbohydrates, participants were able to loose an average of 16.5 pounds more than those on diets that contained meat or animal products. At the end of the study those in the vegan diet group had lower body mass indexes (BMIs), lower amounts of saturated fats, and a better balance of macronutrients (carbs, fats, proteins).

Vegans: This diet is characterized by the absence of meat and animal products. People on this diet do not consume eggs, dairy products, or honey. People may choose this diet for health, ethical, or personal reasons.

Remember: Everyone is different. What works for one person in losing weight may not be optimal for another. Moderation and long-term success should be the end goals of any diet. Eating any diet that includes refined grains that we find today may not be the healthiest or easiest way to lose weight. Whole grains should be used to reach your daily carbohydrate needs. Whole grains are more filling, nutritious, and sustainable than refined grains. There are many healthy and unhealthy ways to lose weight. Try to find a healthy way to keep weight off that aligns with your lifestyle.
